The Blood Brain Barrier
Apr 09, 2026
You may not know this, but your nervous system is surrounded by a protective barrier that helps control what substances can cross. This layer of tightly packed endothelial cells is known as the blood brain barrier (BBB) and it helps protect the brain from bacteria, viruses and toxins. It selectively allows glucose, amino acids, nutrients and certain medications to cross. This barrier system works to protect the brain from harmful substances that may be in the body while allowing fuel and essential nutrients to cross.
The BBB can become disrupted by conditions like multiple sclerosis, stroke, brain tumors and hypoxic or traumatic brain injuries. Infections like meningitis or encephalitis can cause rapid breakdown in the barrier. Chronic alcohol abuse and poor sleep have both been found to damage the cells of the BBB. Prolonged exposure to air pollution, smoke and other toxins also degrade the barrier system.
A compromised BBB has been associated with an increased risk of Alzheimer’s disease. Research suggests that BBB breakdown is an early event that starts before the accumulation of amyloid beta plaques or cognitive changes. A disrupted BBB leads to a reduction in blood flow, impaired waste clearance and easier entry of toxins into the brain. This, in turn, can lead to increased neuroinflammation and damage to the brain cells.
Certain nutrients have been found to have potential in supporting the BBB, reducing inflammation and enhancing overall brain health.
Omega-3 fatty acids support brain cells and decrease inflammation
Resveratrol & curcumin & glutathione reduce inflammation and protect cells from oxidative damage.
Choline is necessary for producing acetylcholine, the primary neurotransmitter involved in regulating learning, memory and focus.
Vitamin D & B vitamins support cognitive function, mood regulation, cellular energy production and neurotransmitter metabolism.
These nutrients are found in various fruit, vegetable and protein sources. Keys to maintaining a healthy BBB include eating a diet rich in antioxidants, omega-3 fatty acids, vitamins and minerals. The KetoFlex 12/3 nutrition plan prioritizes foods that contain robust amounts of these nutrients.
Other strategies for maintaining BBB integrity involve reducing toxic exposures and stress as well as optimizing good sleep. Combining these approaches all help to protect and promote the blood brain barrier, contributing to better brain function and decreased progression of cognitive decline.
